4-H Shooting Sports Coaches Certification 

Description

Kentucky 4-H believes that all youth should have opportunities for positive youth development in our four guiding concepts: mastery, belonging, independence, and generosity. Volunteers play a key role in developing these skills for all youth in 4-H. To ensure that all Kentucky 4-H members have a well-rounded educational experience in their chosen shooting sports discipline(s) volunteers wishing to coach a specific discipline must be certified. Every Kentucky county wishing to offer one of the six (6) shooting sports disciplines must have a minimum of one (1) adult certified coach in that discipline. A volunteer can obtain certification by attending one of the KY 4-H Shooting Sports Coaches Certifications offered throughout the year.

Coaches Certification is a 3 day, 2-night training course provided for both adults and teens. Successful certification requires a minimum of 12 hours of instruction and range work plus the completion and passing of a final exam. Only one discipline may be completed per workshop. This training is open to both adults (19 years of age or older, “aged out” by 4-H age policy) and teens (14 years of age or older per their 4-H age). Nationally certified Shooting Sports Instructors provide all materials and training. The objectives of this workshop are:

• To provide 4-H volunteers with training, resources and curriculum, developed by the National 4-H Shooting Sports Committee, necessary to conduct successful and safe activities for 4-H club meetings and practices.
• To ensure a sound and well-rounded educational experience for youth enrolled in the shooting sports program.
• To provide 4-H volunteers with a strong foundation in positive youth development.
• To reduce the liability that volunteers may encounter when working within the 4-H Shooting Sports Program. This is accomplished by ensuring that all 4-H shooting sports coaches are following an approved curriculum and have been certified by the University of Kentucky to work with youth.
