Demonstrating citizenship through community action is one of the primary mission mandates of the National 4-H Program.  Like all 4-H programs nationwide, the Florida, Kentucky and Tennessee 4-H programs want to challenge our 4-H members with "call to community action" this October.  We are focusing the entire month on civic engagement and encourage 4-H members to take part on or around October 13, 2012.  During this day, and throughtout the month, 4-H Youth Development programs across the country are asked to work on making a positive impact in their communities.  Counties and clubs are asked to design programs that best fit their needs while contributing to the over spirit of making a difference!

To help provide focus, this year we have initiated a "Youth Against Poverty" tri-state project as a movement to recognize a very serious problem involving teens, children and their families in our country. Roughly one out of six elderly Americans are living below the poverty line, 1 in 4 children under the age of 18 in the United States go to bed hungry each night, and half of the global population lives on less than $2 a day.  It's the responsibility of our youth to recognize, educate, and take the opportunity to solve this growing problem. By creating this project we are trying to inspire youth to take action against the devastating living conditions of those less fortunate within our communities. The necessity of this action has become more apparent over the past few years. It is for this reason that our main goal is to empower youth to get their clubs and their communities heavily involved. We hope that with this project we can impact communities and bring hope back into the lives of those affected by poverty.

  Participating individuals and groups are asked to complete an event report by the end of October about how they made a difference in their community. Comments and ideas will be used to further develop tools to "make the best better" for the future civic engagement days!

Individuals, Clubs and Counties are invited to record their personal participation story at the following link.  Even though your state may have selected a specific day in October for this program, please share any civic engagement activities you did in October in the spirit of "making a difference"!
